The Brief
Princess Rogelyn La Peña was competing as Candidate #2 in MPC 2025. A candidate film has an unusually hard job: it has to introduce a person, establish what they actually stand for, and do it in roughly two minutes to an audience that has never met them.
The failure mode for this format is a highlight reel with a music bed — attractive, and completely interchangeable. The brief was to make a film that could only be about her.
The Approach
We built the piece around a sit-down interview rather than a voiceover script, and shot it outdoors across the spring — formal gardens, magnolias in bloom, hedge lines, a stone monument, a bridge in the woods. Shooting a single subject across multiple locations in the same wardrobe gives the edit somewhere to cut without ever leaving her voice, which is what keeps a two-minute talking-head film from stalling.
Her own footage carries the evidence. Rather than describe her background, the film cuts to it: varsity soccer with the UTM Eagles, team huddles and match play, the celebration where the crowd raises a hand-painted MPC2025 CANDIDATE #2 sign, and community outreach work in the Philippines with children at a covered court. Some of that material is archival phone video, and we cut it in without apology — the shift in texture reads as authenticity, not as a defect.
Family is handled the same way. Her mother appears in-frame with her instead of being mentioned in narration. It costs three seconds and does more than a sentence would.
The grade holds a soft, high-key spring palette through the interview material so the archival inserts land as a deliberate contrast rather than a mismatch. Coloured smoke in the closing section gives the film a final visual beat before it resolves.
Craft Notes
Interview-led structure
Her voice drives the film end to end. Every cutaway is there to support a specific line rather than to fill time.
Multi-location continuity
One subject, one wardrobe, several garden and woodland locations — giving the edit cutting room without breaking the thread of the interview.
Archival integration
Phone-shot soccer, pageant, and outreach footage cut alongside cinema material. The texture change is treated as part of the language of the film.
Natural-light portraiture
Shot on open shade and overcast spring light, keeping skin tones soft and the backgrounds in bloom.
