The Brief
Chicago Memories is a travel short built from a winter trip with no shot list and no client. It is in the portfolio for a specific reason: it demonstrates the harder half of the job — taking unscripted, opportunistic footage and imposing a structure on it in post that makes it feel authored.
The goal was a film that plays as a designed piece rather than a camera roll. Nothing was reshot. Everything was found.
The Approach
The film opens indoors and quiet — a hotel room, low light, someone half-asleep against a window — before the title card lands over an aerial of a boat cutting the Chicago River. That contrast sets the contract with the viewer: this is a personal trip, shot at scale.
Structurally the short runs on character. Rather than a continuous travelogue, we cut in handwritten name cards to introduce the people on the trip, which turns a series of locations into a story with a cast. It also gives the edit natural chapter breaks that pure location footage cannot provide.
Winter did most of the art direction. Shooting through the holiday season put practical lights in nearly every frame — Michigan Avenue’s canopy lighting, the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier, storefront neon, the illuminated installations downtown. We leaned into it and shot heavily at blue hour and after dark, using the city’s own light as the key and keeping ISO high rather than adding fixtures.
Daylight material — the Riverwalk, skateboarding through empty plazas, State Street traffic — provides the contrast that keeps the night sequences from flattening out. The film closes on a text matte: the word CHICAGO filled with the footage of everyone laughing, which resolves the trip back to the people rather than the place.
Craft Notes
Available-light night work
Shot on the city’s practicals — holiday installations, signage, and street lighting. No supplementary lighting, which keeps the locations honest and the crew mobile.
Aerial establishing
A drone plate over the Chicago River carries the main title and gives the short the scale its opening promises.
Character title cards
Hand-lettered name cards introduce the cast and double as the film’s chapter structure — the device that turns trip footage into a narrative.
Text-matte finish
Footage keyed inside the letterforms of CHICAGO for the closing frame, tying the title design to the people in the film.
